As of 2016, the estimated population of Waynesboro is 21,722 but the last official population was taken during the 2010 Census and was 21,006.

Waynesboro’s population grew considerably during the early-mid 20th century growing from a population of 1,389 in 1929 to 6,226 in 1930. It continued to grow at a rapid pace until the 1970s when several research and manufacturing facilities left the area including DuPont. The population has grown by 26% compared to 32% growth for the state overall.
